Negative reinforcement is a technique used to condition or teach the person what is right and what is wrong. It does not necessarily imply use of force. Whether it is conditioning your children at home, in school or disciplining your pet, punishing them to show your disapproval can be carried out in numerous methods. |

If you use force to discipline the person, he/she may not react in the right manner, in fact, the person might turn out to be more aggressive and challenge your disciplinary actions. In other instances, the child may become an introvert and suffer from low self-esteem with constant disciplinary actions, In case of pets, stern methods will affect them psychologically.
Negative reinforcement is a technique whereby the person/pet is punished in such a way that they end up understanding the reasons behind the disciplinary action and find a way out to prevent themselves from falling into the same pit again. For example, if a child comes late to school, punishing the child by giving him/her detention will make the child understand that he/she should not be late to school the next time around to avoid detention. This will teach the child to be punctual and develop a sense of discipline.
In case of animals, if your pet ends up misbehaving, rubbing the pet’s nose against an offensive object with a terrible odor will prevent your pet from repeating the behavior. Ignoring the animal to show your disproval will also make the animal understand that the behavior is not well accepted/approved of by the owner.
