Consistency and words of encouragement is the key here. Make your dog feel loved and appreciated each time he performs an activity. For example, if you want your dog to stay in a particular place and he obliges, give him his favorite food or reward him with his favorite toy. This way, he will understand that his behavior is well accepted by his owner.
Dogs try to please their owners and yearn for their affection. So never belittle their activities. Make them feel happy. Older dogs are more accustomed to their owners and are therefore relatively easier to train than puppies. Older dogs will also have a better attention and concentration power when compared to puppies that are naturally a lot more inquisitive and energetic.
