Training For An Old Dog

It is important for you to understand that it is never too late to train your dog with some important tricks in the trade. If you want him to obey certain commands or orders, you just have to be patient with him until he understands what you want him to do.

Consistency and words of encouragement is the key here. Make your dog feel loved and appreciated each time he performs an activity. For example, if you want your dog to stay in a particular place and he obliges, give him his favorite food or reward him with his favorite toy. This way, he will understand that his behavior is well accepted by his owner.

Dogs try to please their owners and yearn for their affection. So never belittle their activities. Make them feel happy. In case of older dogs, it is always easier to train them “what to do” rather than stopping them from doing a particular activity. For example, you should teach him to go out and do potty instead of stopping or preventing him from doing it at home. Training the dog to do an activity is easier than stopping him from doing an activity. Remember to use the same commands and set of words each time. Do not confuse him with your vast vocabulary. He will never understand or pick any command this way.

Older dogs are more accustomed to their owners and are therefore relatively easier to train than puppies. Older dogs will also have a better attention and concentration power when compared to puppies that are naturally a lot more inquisitive and energetic.
