If you are the type of person who does not like his house from getting messy, or does not want to cope with a runaway dog, then you should train your dog to stay in the yard. Training a dog to stay in the yard can be fun for you and your dog. However, it will require some amount of effort and time to ensure that your dog is properly trained. |

Start with training by teaching the dog to respect boundaries. The boundaries can be that of the house or the yard. This training needs a lot of patience, time and consistency. Your dog should grasp properly the obedience commands such as heel and stay. Obedience is very important when it comes to training your dog to stay inside within the boundaries.
Start training your dog indoors. Take the dog to the door and do not open the door. Instead look into its eyes and command it with the word halt. Also, use an action to make it understand the word.
After that open the door slightly so that it cannot go outside. If it tries to get outside, close the door push it back and say 'no' in a firm voice, and repeat the word 'halt' with the hand motion.
After you start the outdoor training, make the dog walk on a leash all around the boundaries of your yard many times everyday. Do not leave it free to roam around. Every time it wants to wander say 'no' in a firm voice.
You have to keep giving the dog some treats, verbal rewards and pats if it has done a good job. Reward the good behavior and correct the bad behavior.
Once your dog figures out the boundaries, allow it to roam in the yard without a leash. If the dog tries to run out of the yard, say no in a loud and clear voice. Also, command the dog to halt. If the initial training was good, the dog should halt immediately. Then command the dog to return. Give the dog some treats. Again put the leash and show the boundaries of the yard. Say 'no' in a firm voice. Then let the dog loose and see the result. This will require some time, so do not expect instant results.
