How To Use A Dog Training Collar ?

With numerous dog collars available in the market, you might get a little confused in trying to figure out which collar is best suited for your dog. It is very important to train your dog to behave himself and not outrun you when you are outdoors. Dog collars are extremely useful in this regard.

Different types of dog collars are suited for different purposes. Listed below are a few commonly available dog collars in the market:

Buckle collars: These are inexpensive and very easy to use. They can be used to train your dog to perform simple activities like “sitting”, “jumping”, “lying down” “running”, etc. These collars are perfect for small to medium sized dogs.

Martingale collar: This is ideal for an average sized dog. If your pet has a habit of pulling himself out of the collar, these are simply perfect to teach him not to do so. They are made up of nylon cords. These fit perfectly behind the dogs’ ears and run right under the chin. When the dog tries pulling himself away, these cords will slightly contract preventing him from doing so. Do not use these collars on long haired breeds. Chances of their fur getting entangled around the cords are very high.

Gentle leader: This is perfect for dogs that pull on the leash. It is made up of two collar bands that fit around the neck and muzzle respectively. Both the bands join right under the chin. Each time the dog tries pulling away, the leash pulls the dog’s neck downwards preventing him from running away.

Slip collar: This has to be used by experienced pet owners. These collars tighten around the dog’s neck each time he tries moving forward.
