Dog Food For Diabetic

Diabetes mellitus occurs when there is insufficient usage of insulin in the body. This could be due to increased food intake causing the number of glucose molecules to overtake the amount of insulin molecules. It could also be due to faulty pancreatic functioning causing a decreased production of insulin. In some cases, the animal’s body is desensitized towards insulin molecules and is therefore not very effective in bringing the glucose levels down.

Irrespective of the reason, an increased circulation of glucose molecules leads to a condition called diabetes mellitus and is very dangerous disorder if left untreated.

If your dog has been diagnosed with one, you should immediately change his feeding patterns and type of food to prevent further complications. You can discuss with your vet before bringing drastic feeding modifications. There are high chances of your dog becoming lethargic and not displaying the same level of energy and vigor. You should, therefore, feed your dog twice a day to make sure his blood glucose level does not alarmingly fall below the required levels.

Remember to feed your pet at regular timings. Do not change the timings every day. This will force your pet to produce inconsistent levels of insulin hampering the treatment. Feed him twice a day immediately followed by an insulin injection to keep the glucose molecules in check. A fiber rich diet is ideal because it prevents a steep rise in blood glucose level. Also, remember to give him adequate quantities of water.

Although readymade commercial dog foods are ideal, if you are particular about preparing one at home, discuss what to include and avoid with your vet before doing so.
