If you think that your dog is affected with tapeworm, you should seek a veterinary’s advice at the earliest. Tapeworms can affect any type of dog, irrespective of its age and breed. But sometimes, due to the different types of transitional hosts for each variety of tapeworms, it might happen that dogs of a particular region are prone to a particular type of tapeworm. As in the case of D. laturn type of tapeworm which affects those dogs who consume fish that are infected with it. D. Laturn type of tapeworm is mostly seen in Great Lakes and in Arctic areas.

The most common way of tapeworm infection is by ingesting an infected transitional host. A transitional host is defined as an organism that carries the immature stage of a tapeworm. The other methods of getting infected is by consuming tapeworm eggs that are present in the stools of human or any other animal. One of the most important things to prevent tapeworms in dogs is to take care of the flea infestation. In some houses, flea infestation may cause tapeworm infection. Dogs occasionally ingest fleas that serve as transitional host for tapeworm larvae and thus, get the infection indirectly.
