People who contract intestinal tapeworm may feel weak and nauseous, suffer from diarrhea and have pain in the stomach. Loss of appetite and weight are also the result of tapeworm infection. The fish tapeworm known as Diphyllobothrium latum sucks Vitamin B12 from the blood making the person anemic. Vitamin B12 is used by the body in the production of RBCs.

Tapeworm infection, if not treated for a long time, may cause some serious problems. Tapeworms form cysts which result in fever, bacterial infections, brain seizures and allergic reactions. Cysts in the brain and tissues are termed as cysticercosis. It leads to headaches, confusion or some other forms of neurological problems. In very rare cases, cysts might also develop in the eyes causing blindness, or may affect the spinal cord and in extreme instances result in even paralysis.

Those who suffer from tapeworm infection may feel a moving sensation near the area of anus. Sometimes, tapeworms can be also noticed in the stool like very tiny ribbons. Dead worms are often seen near the anus.

Tapeworm infection can be treated. If you see and observe any of the above symptoms, try the most common medicines like praziquantel or albendazole. If tapeworm infection is not treated, it may need a surgery or organ transplants. To prevent tapeworm infection, avoid all raw food items and undercooked meat or fish.
