Why Are Roundworms Difficult To Control ?

Roundworms live in your pet’s intestinal tract. They multiply there and they can be found in the dog’s feces. Roundworms can be of many types such as esophageal worms, stomach worms, heartworms, lungworms, hookworms, thread worms and so on. They can grow to be even six inches in length.

The symptoms of roundworm infestation depend on the kind of roundworm that is causing the problem. Most commonly it is hookworms or ascarids that cause the problem.

Roundworms are difficult to control because they lay so many eggs. These eggs cannot be killed by drugs. They are just passed off by the body during bowel movements. Though treatment is quite effective with modern drugs, still, it is difficult to control the problem.

Controlling roundworms is important because the condition can lead to malnutrition and subsequent blocking of the arteries which can get fatal. Though there are several ways of controlling roundworms, there are certain unavoidable difficulties that need to be overcome first.

Since a dog consumes roundworm eggs that stick to their fur or feet, it is mandatory to maintain the dog’s hygiene at all times. Roundworms are immune to disinfectants because of which it often becomes quite difficult to banish them. The same is also true for roundworm eggs. In fact, roundworms are immune even to harsh weather conditions. So, special care needs to be taken to ensure that the eggs are also eliminated from the body of the dog. In case of puppies, this is especially important as a puppy can even die because of roundworm infestation.
