Roundworms are also termed as nematodes. These are parasites that infect mammals, and even human beings. Roundworms live in the intestinal tract and can reach lengths varying from 1 millimeter to 1 meter. Ascaris lumbricoides is the type of roundworm found in human beings. The other two types of round worms are Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati. All these types of roundworms reside in the intestinal tracts are well known for its highly infectious nature causing chronic problems. These worms look like spaghetti. These worms are usually transmitted from one infected body to another via direct contact or through ingestion of food, water or any item that has been contaminated with these types of roundworms. They are also known to be transferred from a mother to a baby which breast feeding and via in-utero transmission.
Human roundworms generally occur in developing countries, especially in wastewater that is often used for watering and irrigating crops. The roundworm symptoms begin with a mild fever to abdominal discomfort and as the infection spreads it leads to many severe symptoms.
Roundworms, if not treated in time, can lead to migration of these worms in different parts of the body causing muscle spasm and joint pains. The treatment of roundworm starts with stool investigation. These worms become visible under microscope hence a microscopic investigation of the stool would reveal the severity of the infection. Once confirmed, the treatment continues for a couple of days till the infection is completely eliminated.
