Roundworm is an infection that can affect all breeds and is most commonly seen to infect dogs when they are just puppies. If a puppy is born to a dog having roundworms, it is possible for the puppy to also get roundworms. This disease is caused by two different species of a parasitic worm present in a dog's intestines which are likely to migrate to other body systems.
Dogs with roundworm symptoms face difficulties with their lungs which may lead to vomiting or coughing. The dog's health gets affected because of malnutrition due to insufficient absorption by the walls of the intestines; loss of appetite; lethargy, and in acute cases, roundworm infection may also lead to intestinal blockage.
Any dog is susceptible to the roundworm infection though puppies under 4 weeks of age are most likely to get them. Roundworms also pass down from mother to pup during fetal development or feeding. It is worth remembering that a roundworm can lay up to two hundred thousand eggs in a single day and the development of an adult worm from an egg take hardly a week at the most!
In order to detect roundworms in a dog, it is important to get the stools examined at regular intervals. The dog should also be toilet trained well and the belongings of the dog sanitized from time to time with household bleach. The fecal matter of the dog should not be allowed to lie scattered around. Instead it should be disposed off properly. Deworming regularly is an effective control.
