Roundworms reside in the intestines of a dog and depend on the half digested food inside the dog’s intestine. Unlike hookworms, they never attach themselves to the inner walls of the intestine. These worms also try to float in the food and release the tiny eggs and pass it on through the stool of the dog.

The reasons for having this infection in the dogs are due to ingestion of eggs, through utero transmission or through mother’s milk. Dogs are most likely to consume the roundworm larvae through other animals that would be carrying then like cockroaches, earthworms, rodents and also chickens. The roundworms eggs can be passed on to a puppy through the mother’s milk. Sometimes, they can even swallow the eggs of roundworm that are present in their bodies. These worms pass through all the internal body parts finally reaches to its destination point known as intestine.

The most noticeable symptoms of roundworm infection in a dog are loss in weight, diarrhea, vomiting, appearance of a pot belly in puppies, dull-looking fur, and finally cough if the larvae have been able to penetrate inside the lungs. Few other symptoms which are less noticeable are constipation or intestinal obstruction, destruction of intestinal tract, pneumonia and lastly death.
