Differences Between Flatworms And Roundworms

Flatworms are un-segmented worms and belong to the division of phylum Platyhelminthes. They do not have coelom, respiratory system or a circulatory system. These flat parasites acquire their food from a host and their digestive system is very peculiar with only one opening. Flatworms have egg stages have temporary larval forms. Flatworms have complex life cycles and they require multiple hosts.

Roundworms, on the other hand, are bilaterally symmetrical invertebrates which belong to the division of phylum Nematoda. These worms are cylindrical have a simple body plan. Roundworms have one way digestive system that has opening at both ends. Roundworms are widely distributed all over the world. Almost all are dioecious and the male roundworm is usually smaller than the female.

Both flatworms and roundworms are invertebrates. The both need hosts to propagate and derive nutrition.

With all the similarities, the two types of worms also have many differences. Some of the differences between flatworms and roundworms are as follows:

  • Flatworms have flat bodies whereas the body of roundworm is cylindrical
  • Flatworms are monecious whereas roundworms are diecious
  • Flatworms have leaf shaped body whereas roundworms have long and slender bodies with conical ends.
  • Flatworms have incomplete digestive tract but roundworms have complete digestive tract.

As can be seen in the above description, both flatworms and roundworms have significant differences. It is necessary to understand their difference to see how they can affect the body and can cause health problems.

Both flatworms and roundworms are common infestations in humans and animals, and are found abundantly all over the world.
