Ringworm is a disease that spreads easily. It is possible to get ringworm by touching someone who has been affected by the disease. Besides direct contact, it can also be contacted indirectly by touching any surface that has been touched by an infected human, or animal. Even though it is thought that ringworm can be communicated by contact with soil, this rarely happens. All bodies infected by ringworm are carriers of the disease and they remain so till they are completely cured of it.
Ringworm spreads very easily in close quarters and that is why it is common in gyms, shared bathrooms and even kindergartens. The fungus that causes the infection thrives in moist warm environment.
On farms, hairs of infected animals often remain stuck to fences, trees, bushes etc., and the fungus breeds in them for years. Anybody that comes in contact with these hair can easily catch the infection. Also, it is often seen that the carrier and transmitter of the infection shows no sign of the infection. This feature about the disease is what makes it to be overlooked so often.
Ringworm affecting different parts of the body is caused by different fungi. However, all these organisms belong to the same group, which is known as Dermatophytes. In addition, they cause the similar symptoms in all the affected areas of the body.
