Is Ringworm Systemic ?

Ringworm is a fungal infection that is actually quite contagious. Contrary to its name, this disease is not related to worms in any way, though it is named as such. This is because the primary manifestation of the disease is in the form of a ring-shaped appearance on the skin. Ringworm is fungal infection and it can affect people as well as pets.

This disease can be contracted by direct contact with an affected pet or person. The appearance of the ring-shaped sign does not happen throughout the body. Hence, ringworm is not systemic by nature. On the other hand, if it simultaneously affects the hair, scalp, nail, skin and feet, it can be called as systemic.

However, the treatment given for ringworm is systemic. Pet who are given treatment for ringworm diseases have to take the prescribed drugs for a period of six weeks and perhaps even longer at times. The most common drugs used to treat ringworm infection are Intraconazole, given to cats and Griseofulvin, meant for dogs. As part of systemic treatment these drugs are given orally to the affected pet.

In addition to administering the drugs necessary to resolve ringworm problem, it is also important to give topical treatment to the affected skin area. Clipping of hair around the infected site also helps to reduce contamination from environment that can eventually aggravate this problem.

It is important to treat ringworm as soon as possible as it can cause a lot of irritation. The red patches caused by ringworm can spread quickly to other parts of the body.
