Rabies is a deadly disease which affects the brain. It has fatal consequences unless immediate treatment is given. One of the main reasons why rabies occurs is because of a bite from an infected animal. The symptoms of the disease are quite maddening and debilitating. It is for this reason that you should vaccinate your pet. |

If you have a puppy, it is wise to get a vaccination done, but this must be undertaken only after the puppy has reached over four months of age.
Soon after a puppy is administered a rabies shot, special care needs to be taken of him/her. If the dog is breathing heavy and the face looks flushed and watery along with vomiting tendencies, then it is a life threatening allergic reaction. In such a case, the vet needs to be called immediately. Sometimes, there may be just common reactions to the vaccine like a fever, which can be controlled by simple fever medication for puppies.
The puppy might be a little lethargic after the vaccination but it is nothing to be worried about. However, if there are other reactions like aggressive or destructive behavior, obsessive compulsive behaviors (like chasing tails or licking paws), seizures and epilepsy, autoimmune diseases, allergies, skin problems, digestive disorders, muscle weakness, pica (eating inappropriate and non-edible things), fibrocarcinomas at the injection site, then it is advisable to seek immediate medical help.
You should never vaccinate the puppy with rabies if it has had another vaccination three weeks earlier. Otherwise the rabies vaccination will be ineffective. If your puppy has had an earlier vaccination for rabies, it is not necessary to vaccinate it again unless stipulated by the vet.
