Rabies can be transmitted in many different ways. One is through bites from an infected animal, else from a person who has rabies or unintentional exposure to the virus itself. Most often the cause of the disease is through bite from a rabid animal. The other two causes are quite rare. The most commonly affected animals are cats and/or dogs and it is easy for rabies to be transmitted by them to humans.
If someone accidentally gets the disease, care needs to be taken to sterilize the area to prevent harm as much as possible. This includes thorough cleaning of the area with soap and warm water followed by medical care. The rabies vaccine should be started immediately. The rabies injections are given on days 0, 3, 7, 14 and 28. It is imperative that this procedure is followed as only then can the right results can be seen in treatment. Those patients who have not previously been vaccinated for rabies have to get an injection of rabies immune globulin (RIG) on day 0.
Remember, sterilizing the affected area enables you to keep the area clean and prevents the rabies virus from penetrating into the body. In addition, it also alleviates the possibility of an infection setting in. It is vital that treatment be given according to schedule and sanitization be followed regularly to make the treatment more effective.
