Rabies is a viral infection that affects the pet’s brain. It is quite a debilitating disease which affects the central nervous system of the body and causes complete body malfunction. Unless immediate treatment is given, the disease can be fatal.

Since prevention is always better than cure, a rabies vaccine can be administered to prevent your pet from succumbing to it accidentally.

The rabies vaccine is the only vaccine that has been imposed by the government of the United States as mandatory for dogs. The primary reason for this is to prevent humans from getting infected by rabies and succumbing to it.

It is better to opt for the three-year vaccine than the one-year one. This is because the one year vaccine has to be given more often and hence, it has the potential of causing side effect, which is another factor that pet owners must be aware of.

When it comes to puppies, they should be vaccinated only when they are above four months and not earlier. It is also imperative that a dog is not given the vaccine if it has shown an adverse reaction to an earlier rabies vaccination. In which case you need to consult the vet to figure out what the next course of action should be. In case the pet has had some serious illness, it is not wise to vaccinate in such a condition.

Dogs must be taken for their rabies vaccination only when they are in sound health. They should not have any other vaccination shot for about a month prior to the day on which you intended to take them for a shot.
