How To Test A Dog For Rabies ?

As per the statistics of AnimalHealthCenter.com, the cause of rabies in human beings is 97 percent of the time a dog bite. Pet or domesticated animals are known to contract the disease if bitten by another animal carrying the infection. The probability of rabies can be reduced by getting your pet vaccinated against the disease.

However, if exposed to the rabies virus, immediate treatment must be commenced in the form of a series of vaccinations. If treatment is delayed to the point of onset of symptoms, death is certainly on the cards. Deciphering whether a dog has the infection or not is a rather complicated task and thereby some knowledge regarding the same may prove beneficial especially for pet owners.

Some of the typical signs of the disease in dogs are formation of froth in the mouth, a stumbling walk, difficulty in swallowing, and breathing problems. Incase if these indications are noticeable; a trip to the veterinarian would be a wise idea. To confirm the diagnosis, the veterinarian may like to test samples of the dog’s saliva, spinal fluid and serum. However, the results of these tests cannot be relied upon completely and the only authentic test for rabies is the ‘direct fluorescent antibody test’. This test is quite complicated as it involves analysis of the brain tissue, the extraction of which requires euthanizing the animal.

If a person is bitten by an animal and suspects it to be rabid, it would be wise to visit a doctor at the earliest. Never adopt the ‘wait and watch’ formula when it comes to rabies. Commence treatment as soon as possible especially before the advent of the symptoms as that may be your only chance of survival.
