Rabies is a virus borne disease that affects only mammals. Other living organisms in the animal kingdom such as birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish are not reported to contract the disease. The mode of transmission of the rabies virus is contact with the saliva or blood of an infected animal. Therefore, most commonly the bite of an animal infected with the causal virus results in the contraction of rabies. |

The best way of prevention against rabies is the administration of rabies vaccinations and immunoglobulin injections. Commencing treatment immediately after the bite can also increase the chances of cure. The symptoms of the disease manifest in about 2 to 8 weeks after the bite. However, by this time if no treatment is conducted the probability of cure becomes bleak.
The disease is known to affect the nervous system resulting in encephalopathy. The indications of the disease include a drastic change in the temperament of the bitten organism which could be either towards extreme aggression or withdrawal. The rate of fatality is also extremely high in rabies.
Rabies is a disease that is caused by a virus. It is not known to have a genetic origin and therefore cannot be prevalent in an animal at birth. Thus, if a pet animal has been given prevention injection for rabies, the animal is more or less secure from the same. Human beings are also known to contract the disease through the bite of infected warm blooded animals such as dogs, cats and cows. Even if the concerned animal is vaccinated against rabies, any animal bite should be taken seriously and immediate medical advice must be sought to avoid any chances of contracting the dangerous disease of rabies.
