What Do Mites Look Like ?

Mites are found in abundance and are considered to be the most available species among the entire invertebrate category. These are microscopic species that cannot be visible with naked eyes. These are found abundantly in the soil and water. Many of them can also be seen as parasites which live on other plants and animals.

They look like transparent creatures and are round or oval in shape. The female mites are slightly bigger than the male counterparts. Mites appear in different colors a lot depend on what they feed on. Mites are enclosed in a delicately thin permeable skin. Such a delicate encasing makes them susceptible to loss of water. An adult mite appears with eight legs without an antenna or an eye.

The widely available types of mites are the Acari or Acarina. These are, however, very difficult to notice due to their extremely small size; smaller than one millimeter. The giant Acari mite would be about 10 mm in length and appear in red velvet color. It is usually seen in the tree trunks hunting for its prey. The next category of mites that is noticeable is the water mites due to its bright colors and frequent movements. The smallest of all varieties of mites are the human follicle mite or the honeybee tracheal mite. These are 0.1mm in length and cannot be observed without a microscope.

The genesis of mites goes back to some four hundred millions of years back. The main three ancestries which have been recognized of late are known as Parasitiformes, Acariformes and Opilioacariformes. Till now, at least 45,000 species of mites have been projected. This is not even five percent of the entire species that is present today.
