The stage at which the symptoms of Lyme disease emerge and are identified plays a significant role in the treatment of the disease. Although there are many new forms of treatment floating around, but as per the Centers for Disease Control and the Infectious Disease Society of America the only form of authentic treatment for Lyme disease is administration of antibiotics. |

Treatment commenced within the initial 3 weeks of the invasion of the pathogenic bacterium is considered most beneficial. Intake of any of three antibiotics namely amoxicillin, doxycycline, or cefuroxime axetil is recommended for cure. Out of these three medicines, cefuroxime axetil is comparatively more expensive. In cases where the infection aggravates and results in disorders related to the nervous system and heart, antibiotics such as ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, or penicillin are administered intravenously. If the administration of the treatment is delayed beyond the first 3 weeks of infection, the probability of complete cure becomes doubtful. There are patients who are reported to experience indications of Lyme disease months and even years after the actual infection. In such cases, the course of treatment is rather debatable.
There is one sect of doctors that believe that in such conditions, more than one course of antibiotics may be necessary to obtain optimum results. However, there is risk attached to long term treatment via antibiotics in the form of several side effects to the level of fatality. On the other hand, many physicians opine that only standard length of antibiotic treatment is sufficient for curing any bacterial infection. There are still others who believe that to be on the safer side, any individual with tick bite must be administered a course of antibiotics as a precautionary measure against the disease. As for women who contract Lyme disease during pregnancy, the treatment is evaluated to be completely safe for the fetus.
