Neurologic Symptoms Of Lyme Disease Dogs

Lyme disease is known to affect dogs. It is caused by a bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi. Dogs get this bacterium from a deer tick bite. When the tick remains on the dog’s skin for more than two days, the bacteria is transmitted throughout the body and the dog succumbs to this disease.

There are many health problems caused by Lyme disease. It can result in swollen ankles or painful joint. Dogs affected by Lyme disease show problems such as depression, lethargy and loss of appetite. In severe cases, it can result in neurological problems as well. Examples of such neurological problems caused by Lyme disease include meningitis and Bell's palsy. It can also cause memory loss and even paralysis.

Those suffering from Lyme disease have reported about neurological problems such as mood swings and changed in their usual sleeping routines. Neurologic symptoms of Lyme disease in dogs can begin after the initial skin rash is seen. This is one pattern of its occurrence. Another pattern is where the symptoms come six weeks after the skin rash has disappeared. Usually such neurological problems disappear within a couple of week’s time.

Neurologic symptoms of Lyme disease can cause severe problems. It can bring on a whole set of issues impair normal functioning and deteriorate health. Since the health problems caused by Lyme disease are so severe, it is imperative to seek treatment for it right away. However, one thing to note about Neurologic symptoms is that they are rare, but it is vital to be aware about them, to recognize them when they occur.
