Once the tick bites the dog, the pathogenic bacteria called spirochete gains entry into the bloodstream of the dog, thereby initiating the spread of the infection in the body. The initial signs of the disease may showcase in the form of fever, reduced appetite and weight, disinterest in activities, inflammation of lymph nodes, decrease in the frequency of urination that is dark gold or brown in color, and soreness in the limbs or lameness. Diagnosis of this disease is not a very straight forward task. At times, despite the presence of symptoms indicating towards the disease, the blood tests may not show positive results for the infection. Therefore, many dogs may require undergoing a series of recurrent testing before the disease can actually be verified.
Treatment of Lyme disease in dogs is more effective when commenced in the earlier stages of the infection. Antibiotics like penicillin, tetracycline, and erythromycin aid in curing the disease successfully. In cases where the disease attains an advanced stage without being detected, the dog may suffer from lifelong health problems. Certain ways of preventing Lyme disease in dogs include administration of vaccine against the disease; avoiding areas infested with ticks, making the dog wear a flea or tick collar and checking your pet for ticks at regular intervals of time.
