Is There A Cure For Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is known to be caused by three variants of bacteria belonging to the Borrelia group. The infection is frequently transferred by deer ticks after they bite the skin of another living organism. The first evident indication of the disease comes in the form of a round red rash on the skin. This rash is followed by early detection signs of the disease such as headache, fever and fatigue. These symptoms are quite similar to those experienced during common flu.

Once the symptoms are noticed and diagnosis of the disease is confirmed, treatment should be commenced immediately. In cases where the signs of the disease either do not showcase or go unnoticed, health issues related to the joints, heart and the central nervous system; depression and meningitis are the consequences. Administration of timely treatment through antibiotics produces results within 3 weeks, while delayed recognition of the disease could lead to lifelong health problems, arthritis being one of them.

The antibiotics prescribed for the cure of Lyme disease depend upon aspects such as the stage of the infection, the body part affected by the infection and the general health condition of the patient. The most common medication used for children for this disease is amoxicillin; while doxycycline is considered more suitable for adult patients. In circumstances of infection during pregnancy, erythromycin is believed to be a safe mode of treatment. In conditions, where the disease is identified in an advanced stage of infection and affects the nervous system, ceftriaxone and penicillin G are recommended. Apart from these antibiotics, pain killers may also be prescribed to obtain general relief during the disease. In cases of problems related to arthritis, removal of fluid from the swollen joints or intake of ibuprofen is the best alternative. Despite the prevalence of a successful cure, it is advisable to administer modes of prevention such as use of repellents especially in places where the probability of the infection is relatively higher.
