Dogs contract Lyme disease from a tick. When the infected tick bites a dog, it passes Borrelia burgdoferi bacteria into the dog's bloodstream. The tick usually remains attached onto the animal’s skin for at least a day before the bacteria is transmitted into the blood stream. And, it is these bacteria that cause the disease.
These ticks are called Ixodes or deer ticks and are commonly found on deer in specific regions of the United States. The most common places are the north eastern states, the Mississippi region, some parts of California, and also areas in the South. Infected dogs are not capable of transmitting the disease to humans. The treatment for both dogs and humans is by antibiotic medication.
Some of the dog Lyme disease symptoms include high fever; tiredness and loss of appetite. In addition, the dog may seem anorexic, and suffer from joint inflammation. On rare occasions, this disease develops into a neurological disorder. However, one can easily notice this when the dog does not walk and prefers to stay put in one place. The dog may whine a bit when it has to get up and walk. This is because of the pain in the joints and the body.
