What Is A Kennel Cough ?

Kennel cough is a disease of the upper respiratory tract in dogs. As weird as it may sound, kennel cough has nothing to do with a kennel. Many hold the myth that only dogs kept in kennels can be affected by the disease. Instead, the causal microbe is usually a bacteria or a virus, making the medical condition similar to influenza in human beings.

The disease generates hacking cough in dogs which may or may not be accompanied with phlegm. Although the symptoms are not too severe but the persistent cough can be very discomforting for the animal. Kennel cough is a highly contagious disease and therefore should be treated at the earliest in order to prevent the communication of the infection to other pets in the house. Moreover, if the condition aggravates, it may result into bronchitis. Apart from being a disorder in itself, kennel cough could also be an indication of other health conditions like heart disease, periodontal disease, heartworm, parasites, throat growths, pneumonia, irritations, and allergies. Therefore, immediate medical attention is advisable to evaluate the real disorder and commence treatment at the earliest.

Treatment for kennel cough is administered in the form of antibiotics, intranasal vaccines and inoculations. When it comes to treatment via antibiotic drugs, the selection of the correct medicine is important as bacteria and virus both could be the triggering factors for the disease. Thus, either one should choose a double acting antibiotic or two separate drugs, one each to tackle the bacteria and virus individually. Many dog owners prefer to opt for natural remedies to cure the condition. During the treatment, care must be taken in outdoor locations and while traveling so that the infection does not aggravate and the pet obtains maximum benefit from the remedy.
