The parasite usually enters inside the body of the host via the skin present in between the toes of those who generally remain barefoot. For hookworm to develop and mature, hot and humid areas with compromised sanitation conditions are the best suited.
The adult hookworm resides inside the intestinal walls from where they get feed from the blood of the host. The adult hookworm matures and lays eggs inside the intestinal tracts. The eggs further grow inside the intestinal tract and become larvae. The larvae are gradually passed on to the soil from where they escape to the surrounding environment through feces and enter the soil. Within a time period of five to ten days these larvae further matures to give an appearance of a thread like structures. A hookworm is most likely to cause infections during this stage of lifecycle.
Another way of entry of a hookworm is through the mother’s feed. An infected mother can pass the larvae to the mammary glands through the blood stream. Upon consumption of the mother’s feed, these larvae are further passed on to the baby.
Another occurrence of hookworm entry to a pet’s intestine is if it happens to swallow it through the soil, blade of a grass, a toy or water. Under conditions that are favorable, s these larvae further develop and thus the cycle carries on.
