What Do Hookworms Look Like In Humans ?

Hookworm is a parasite that attaches itself to the insides of the intestinal wall and then it literally drains the blood from its host, be it an animal or a human. However gruesome this may sound, it is even more shocking to know that it is the most common parasite to infect humans. It is extremely common in the people and causes diarrhea, vomiting, or bloody stools. Sometimes people can also suffer from anemia and die, though rarely.

Usually a person who is observant will easily notice the symptoms and get himself checked immediately in the physician’s office. In order to check for infestation of hookworms, a sample of the stool is taken. The eggs of the hookworms will look clear and appear like oblong bubbles with another small bubble inside. When these eggs are seen, it confirms the presence of the hookworm. The simplest solution is to take a de-worming dosage to eradicate the problem. Never self medicate without need and always ask a physician before doing so.

Hookworms measure about 5-10 millimeters in length and 0.2 to 0.5 millimeters in width. The hookworms look long and elongated and their head is bent backwards sharply to resemble a hook. That is why they are called hookworms.

The best way to avoid infection is to walk with slippers or shoes when outdoors and also follow basic hygiene like washing of hands when at home or after using the toilet. Kids and adults should wash their hands after touching their pets. Also, pet owners should follow a fixed schedule of vet visits for their pets.
