When dogs get infested with hookworms the first symptom they show is weakness followed by worms in stool. However, do not think that one symptom follows the other promptly because by the time you find worm or worm eggs in stools, it means that the infestation is in an advanced stage. Did you know that a single hookworm could lay about 10,000 to 20,000 eggs in its life cycle?
So, if a dog has reached a stage where its stool shows presence of worms, it means the hookworms are breeding in plenty inside the dog’s body. There is nothing to worry yet except the fact that the dog has not been eating properly or has been too lethargic. A trip to the vet’s office and a complete worm eradication dosage should solve the problem.
The typical symptoms to watch out for in your dog when they have hookworms are diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue and vomiting. They will also appear dull. The moment you observe dullness, you should suspect that the dog is sick because it is not normal for them. Hookworms typically enter the dog’s body in the form of larvae’s and then grow into adult worms before they lay eggs within the body.
In addition, hookworm eggs are released in dog feces and when children play in the garden and come in contact with the feces, they can get infected. The same is also true for adults. Hookworm eggs can hatch within 1 to 2 days if the ground is sufficiently moist and warm. The hatched larvae live on grass and moist soil from where they can easily get transmitted to humans and pets.
