How Do Dogs Get Heartworm ?

Mosquito bites are the main cause of heartworm disease in the dogs. It can also spread thorough direct contact and affects mostly the street dogs. Once an infected mosquito bites a dog, it deposits heartworm larvae in the dog’s coat. The deposited larvae gradually pass from the coat to skin of the dog and develop into a worm like creatures.

These worms keep increasing in size and gradually creep inside the blood vessels of the dog causing serious problems to the lungs of the dog. For an owner of the dog, it is very difficult to diagnose the problem. And, when the symptoms are shown, the condition would have already worsened. A dog can be in serious condition if the disease is not noticed in advance and treated. The major symptoms of heartworm in dogs are extreme reduction in body weight, heavy or short breathing, unconsciousness, reduced appetite, weakness, loss of energy, nervousness and coughing. Heart failure is the lethal symptoms in many dogs due to the presence of these dangerous parasites.

If you do not want your pet to get such a dreadful disease, it is necessary that you must visit the vet on a regular basis. Each vet advises for a heartworm test after a gap of few months to ascertain that whether your dog possess this disease or not. Vets also suggest preventing the dog from expected heartworm infection by administering them preventive pills. One can continue giving these pills on a regular basis. Incase of the positive test results there’s nothing to worry because there are treatments available for its cure.
