Sand fleas have many names like no-see-ums, midges, beach fleas and sand flies. These tiny creatures feed at dawn and dusk to hunt for small aquatic animals to attack. They do search for light skinned people as they have thinner skins, which is easy for the fleas to pierce. |

Sand flea almost resembles a small mosquito with tiny mouth portions. They are usually seen in small clusters hovering around in small circles producing a sound that is meant to alert their presence. These fleas sting to suck blood. Once they inject the saliva enters the blood making it lighter and easier to be sucked. The saliva that enters the blood results in the irritation of skin causing itching for many days.
These are found in varied quantities near the coastal parts of southern states like the California and Alaska. These are generally found at places where the conditions are most appropriate for them. One of the suitable places for them to breed in millions is the decaying vegetation, such as pools, creeks, lakebeds or places where the water remains stagnant. Once the eggs are being laid they usually are hatched within four to five days turning them to larvae which basically feed on the tiny creatures of water. Larvae are further transformed into pupae that float on the surface of the water resembling small buoys. Those pupae who escape from being eaten by fishes, frogs, birds or other aquatic animals finally turn out to become sand fleas and begin to fly.
