These liquids form a protective layer on the skin and kill the existing fleas. A single topical application is effective for about a month. Indoor animals get protected about 8 weeks from fleas by a single dosage. It is advisable to consult a veterinarian for topical treatments. But if you pet loves swimming and playing in the water or requires more than 3 baths in a month, the topicals that are applied may get washed off. Hence, you should not bathe your pet for about 2 days after applying the topicals.
Oral medications are administered in the form of liquids or pills. On consuming, they are secreted slowly on to the skin of the pet and they help in killing the fleas. PROGRAM, HARTZ FLEA PILLS and CAPSTAR are pills that are sold in the market to kill fleas. PROGRAM gets continuously secreted on to the skin, so even if your dog is bathed frequently, it does not really matter. CAPSTAR is very effective for fleas but lasts for only 1 or 2 days. This is generally used by the veterinarians to treat severe cases of fleas and is not suitable for home medication.
In addition to such medications, steps should be taken disinfect homes, beddings, carpets, upholstery and backyards and even the car as they can house fleas and ticks unknowingly which get transferred to the pets.
