Ear mite infection results in a lot of discomfort to your pet by causing redness of the skin and weakness. The infected ear also develops a foul smell. The mites are easily transmitted between pets, hence, if you have more than one pet at home, you need to take care that the infection does not spread rapidly among them. |

The life cycle of the ear mite is about 21 days. These mites can survive away from the animal for quite sometime and become active when they come in contact with the pet. Hence, ear mites’ infection requires continuous monitoring and treatment for about 4 weeks to clear the mites as well as the eggs that are hatched during the infection period.
The first stage of the infection is the laying of the mite eggs on the surface of the canal of the ear. The incubation period lasts for 4 days after which it hatches. The larva emerges from the eggs and feeds on the wax or the oils present in the skin of the victim. This continues for about another 4 days after which its molts to form a protonymph and then the deutonymph.
At the deutonymph stage, mating happens with the adult males though the gender is not fully established. After this, another molting takes place, this is when the male or female mite is fully formed. The females lay eggs and the cycle of the mites’ restarts and the males go in search of deutonymphs to mate.
The life span of a fully formed ear mite is about 2 months.
