Fleas and ticks are a global menace causing a variety of problems in pets. These insects feed on animal blood causing skin irritation, anemia, rashes and allergic reactions.

Apart from this, ticks and fleas also act as reservoir and carrier hosts for several harmful pathogen including tapeworms and Rickettsias. Diseases such as Lyme, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever are transmitted by fleas and ticks. Hence, prevention of fleas and ticks in the surroundings is necessary so as to safeguard the health of domestic animals.
One important way of controlling fleas and ticks is use of chemical repellants. Some important chemical products available in the market include Advantage, K9 Advantic, Capstar, Frontline Plus, Frontline Spray, Preventic Collars and Revolution. Most of these products are applied once in a month to the pet’s skin. These chemicals kill almost 98 percent of fleas and ticks within 12 hours of exposure and remain effective for an entire month. These agents can also be used for killing fleas and ticks present on the carpets, lawns and gardens. Revolution, a product manufactured by Pfizer Animal Health, also works towards protecting pets against heartworms and ear mites.
Another fatal parasite infesting domestic animals is heartworm. Heartworms are primarily transmitted through mosquitoes. Heartworm prevention is only possible by eradicating the existence of mosquitoes from the surroundings. Heartworm preventatives are highly effective towards preventing heartworm infection. Some important commercially available heartworm preventatives include HeartGard Plus, Interceptor, Sentinel and Revolution. Mosquitoes are mostly active during dawn and dusk time. Pets have to be kept indoors so as to prevent from mosquito bites. Stagnated water serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. It is important to eliminate areas of standing water.
