Controlling fleas is the biggest challenge that pet owners can face as these pests tend to be present in almost every available area including garden grass, indoor plants, on the skin and fur of animals, bath towels and even on carpets. Fleas spend their larval stage of life cycle on the carpets. Some fleas are even carriers of certain worms and diseases. Hence, it is important to clean carpets and eradicate fleas so as to keep the pet healthy.
Listed below are certain methods for removing fleas and their larvae from the carpets.
- It is important to have the carpet vacuumed regularly. Fleas and their larvae can be sucked into the vacuum cleaner easily. After vacuuming, the dirt bag should be properly sealed and thrown at a distant place away from the home.
- Another good way of controlling fleas in carpet is by spraying flea stoppers or carpet powders containing a chemical known as orthoboric acid. This powder acts as a local insecticide and is not harmful to children and pets. This method is a useful alternative in homes that don’t clean the carpets regularly.
- One can also spray certain synthetic chemicals such as pyrethrins and permethrins available in the market. However, these chemicals are harmful to children and pets. Hence, spraying should be done in an open area and the carpets should be used when the insecticide has dried. Other important chemicals include methoprene and fenoxycarb.
- Cedar acts as a natural insect-repellant. One can use cedar shampoo and cedar oil for cleaning carpets.
- Another way of controlling fleas is to feed pets with food containing Linatone or any other vegetable oil. This keeps the skin oily and prevents attack of fleas.
- Other important natural insect repellants that can be used on the carpet include eucalyptus leaves, orange or lemon peel, lavender oil and garlic.
