Types Of Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu was a gift from the Tibetan monks to the Chinese emperor some 1,400 years ago. During that period eunuchs were the care taker for the dogs. In China it was named as Lion Dog due to its mane resembling to that of lion and was regarded as lucky charm. Later on it gained popularity in Asia also. Lady Browning was the first one to take this dog to England and later on it became very popular.

The American soldiers liked this dog very much in Second World War and brought the dog to United States. In the year 1969, it was distinguished by the American Kennel Club. Slowly this pet became a favorite of everyone. Today, it can be found all across the globe and considered as lucky for everyone. Two kinds of Shih Tzu are there -- the American Shih Tzu and the European Shih Tzu.

The main characteristics of the American Shih Tzu are its high legs, square shaped head, short neck, small eyes and frontal shoulders, while the European Shih Tzu has small and slightly bent legs which are held apart, round head and long and slender neck, protruding and large eyes and laid behind shoulders. These are purebred Shih Tzu. However, Imperial Shih Tzu, tiny Shih Tzu, Teacup Shih Tzu are other breed of Shih Tzu. These dogs have disorders in genes and buying these breeds is often not recommended. But the breeders deceive the customer and sell these dogs on the name of purebred. So, gather complete knowledge and then own a Shih Tzu.
