Sebaceous adenitis is a cosmetic disorder which mostly affects the appearance of the dog and not the health. Due to some infection, sebaceous glands stop secreting oil for the skin which results in dry skin and inflammation and finally die off. Some dogs have dry skin and it is mostly seen in samoyed, standard poodle and akita. Treatments such as anti seborrheic shampoo and fatty-acid diet supplements, special topical sprays, and oral supplements are very useful. But, the recovery is a slow process.
Hypothyroidism is a disorder in which the immune system of the dog attacks the thyroid gland and results in the reduction of production of thyroid hormones and finally affects the metabolism rate of the dog. However, other reasons for predisposition of thyroid gland could be air pollution and allergies. Its symptoms are lethargy, weight gain, infections of the skin, dry skin, loss of hair, slow heart rate, ear infection, and depression among others.
In Addison’s disease, dogs do not produce several hormones but supplements can replace these hormones. This condition also causes hair loss in poodles.
Cushing’s disease is characterized by excess production of glucocorticoid by the adrenal or pituitary gland. The main symptoms for this disease are loss in hair, drinking too much water, frequent urination, eating too much, and having an enlarged abdomen. This disease develops at a very slow rate and mainly it shows the symptoms by shedding hair, which is often misunderstood as old age.
