The thick guard hair of poodles needs a metal combing of smooth brushes. Regular combing helps to protect the thick underlying coat, which is very soft and has a cotton-like texture. Its texture makes the fur vulnerable to twisting, and regular combing prevents tangling and matting of fur. Generally, poodles lose very little or no hair.
