Earlier, dogs were known to eat scraps off the dining table, leftovers, wild meat and offal. It was James Spratt belonging to Cincinnati, Ohio, who has invented dog food which was first processed in the year 1860. The food produced by Ralston Purina is like biscuits, and it is made from beef blood and also vegetables, aimed at giving proper nutrition to a dog.
Ralston Purina Company, which is a subsidiary of Nestle, introduced the extrusion process to make pet food in the 1950s. This process includes mixing and also cooking the food in the form of liquid. A machine pushes this mixture through some small holes which creates the pellets.
After 5 years of introduction of the extrusion process, the company introduced to the public the dog chow. Advertising campaigns were extensively campaigned about the edible and light weight dog chow food.
In the 1970s, veterinarians started differentiating between the nutritional needs of a puppy and an adult dog. Some companies have also offered food for the puppies in the early stages. The puppy chow was introduced by Purina for adult dogs.
There are 3 varieties of foods for puppy chow. They are complete and balanced, healthy morsels formulae for large breeds, and these formulae can also be used to feed puppies.
