Chow Chow Colors

Chow chow dogs are impressive with their lion like features and the royal mannerisms. The puppies look like teddy bears. This is one of the popular breeds at present. About 2000 year ago, the chow was raised in such a way that it could handle all the work and could survive unpleasant environment. The chow was able to do work like herding, hunting, pulling sleds and guarding.

This breed was first kept as guard dog and for hunting by the Mongolian tribes belonging to China. The origin of this breed is not known. The belief by some historians is that it is from the ancient Roman mastiff type of dogs crossed with the spitz types. Some others say that these dogs have originated from the spitz group, shar-pei and akita.

The origination of the black and blue tongue is still unknown. There is an old story which can provide us with an answer. It is said that when God painted the sky, he dropped some paint. The chow chow is said to have licked those drops and as a result it has a blue tongue.

The chow chow first appeared in England apart from China in the 1800s. Sailors who returned from China brought them as a part of cargo in the trade ships. “Chow chow” is a term which is used for the varieties of items which are taken on the ships. These dogs were nicknamed and it stuck them.

Chow chow dog can be seen in five different colors; namely red, black, cinnamon, cream and blue.
