Basenjis have a furrowed wrinkled forehead and long legs. The almond shaped eyes are small. Their thighs are muscular. While the males grow to a height of about 41 – 43 cm, females grow to a height of about 15 inches. The weight of this species can be between 20 – 26 pounds depending on the sex, health conditions and food habits.
The intelligent Basenjis are great entertainers and are quite easy to groom as they do not have a bushy coat. They like to stay dry and do not have a strange odor like many other breeds. Compared to other dog varieties, Basenjis are quite healthy and are prone to fewer health problems.
The highly active Basenjis require lot of space to run around. This independent breed is not suited for families who are looking for an obedient and social pet. Basenjis may not mix very well with strangers and do not like children chasing or pulling them either. They are not the typical ball-fetchers. They can be very aggressive with other dogs or even chase cars. They love to chew trash and are happier with another doggie friend. They can feel miserable if they are left alone. Though they are called barkless, their vocal expression can include shrieks, screams and whines.
