The origins of the Mastiff-type dogs can be traced back in the British Isles before the arrival of Julius Caesar. The Spanish Alaunts came into existence during 1066 when Normans came into picture. The breeding of Mastiffs to the Alaunts gave rise to the BullDog of England.
The 17th and 18th centuries saw the Bulldogs as guardians in farms. They also served as butcher dogs. In addition, they hunted in the woods. Interestingly, they were also used in sports and gambling!
When the bull-baiting was prohibited legally in UK and Spain, the Bulldog became a household pet and was trained to be more complacent. The immigrants of the working class brought the Bulldog into America. Though bulldog went through various modifications in England and Spain, their popularity slowly declined in America. The breed became so rare that when the World War II ended, the Bulldog species was almost reaching extinction. This is when the breeder John D. Johnson decided to save the breed along with Alan Scott and a team of other breeders.
