Timing is very important for the breeding of the dogs. If it is done in at the wrong time, the mating will not give positive results. The semen of the dog can fertilize the eggs up to 5 days, but if it is in the bitch, it is a different story. The heat in the bitch can be up to 2, 3 or many weeks. At this time there is a chance of fertilizing. The timing can be known by figuring out the time of ovulation. |

At the time of ovulation, they release the eggs from the follicles on to the ovaries. Then 48 hours are required for the eggs to ripen, and then they are all set for the fertilization. After 24 hours if they are not fertilized, the eggs die.
The beginning of the bleeding in the bitch is the starting of the phase of breeding cycle which is known as proestrus. At this time, the vulva will get swollen and this causes male attraction. Proestrus will be for almost 9 days. But it can be different for the bitches, ranging from 1 to 21 days. Estrus follows the proestrus phase. Estrus will be for 4 to 13 days. And, the ovulation occurs in the first few days of the estrus phase.
The signs which indicate the estrus phase are the vaginal bleeding which causes the straw colored discharge when the ovulation approaches, the vulva will get swollen very often, and the bitch will respond sexually to the stud.
So, timing for dog breeding is extremely important and should not be neglected if you want to get positive results.
