3.3 percent of the puppies are owned by households. When it comes to having a dog as a pet, 1.8 million are taken from show breeders, 1.3 million from amateur breeders, 2.6 million from mixed breeders and 5 million from pet stores.

The puppy mill, which is also known as puppy farm, is a dog breeding which is a commercial activity and is run to get some profits and do not consider the welfare of the dogs, and are substandard. They neglect the health of the dog and proper food is not given to the dogs. There are about 4,000 puppy mills in the United States that have a production of half million puppies every year.

The United States Department of Agriculture gives licenses to commercial kennels and also inspects them often. However, not all kennels are professionally run. There are breeding centers whose motto is profit, and setup on a small scale. These are usually backyard breeding farms.

According to the United States Humane Society, most of the puppy mills are situated all around the US, but majority of puppy mills can be seen in the states of Pennsylvania, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri and Nebraska.

So, taking into consideration all these facts, it is very difficult to get accurate dog breeding statistics. However, it can be said that dogs are bred in millions across the US in professional kennels as well as puppy mills.
