Estrus is the fertile time of the bitch, which is also known as season or heat cycle. The heat cycle for the first time happens when the bitch is between 6 and 9 months old, and the ones which mature slowly experience it after 12 to 18 months.
A heat cycle which is normal will be for three weeks. The beginning stage is called proestrus during which the vulva of the bitch starts to swell and she keeps licking more often. Male dogs start sniffing the bitch because of the scent produced by it indicates that the dog is entering the breeding stage. After the vulva starts to swell, the bloody discharge is emitted from the vulva.
Between 9 to 12 days, a discharge is released which is in pinkish tan in color, and this is the time when the vulva is softened and eggs get released from ovaries.
A bitch which is healthy experiences season for every 6 months. But some bitches may experience it only once in a year.
You can know that a bitch is all set to breed when it gets flirty and behaves affectionately; it holds the tail high; and when it is petted on the back, it pushes up its rear. It will be willing to present its vulva, and the discharge color is changed from red to pinkish tan.
When a male dog sees a receptive bitch, he gets excited and rises the rear quarter and starts to push. As it is natural, the bitch is penetrated and the glands behind the penis start to swell. The vulva of the bitch is compressed around the swelling, this is known as tie. This happens for 15 to 30 minutes. At this time the sperm enters the bitch. If the female dog conceives, she will deliver puppies between 58 and 63 days.
