The breed is characterized by a round forehead, long hanging ears, rounded eyes, compact body, short back, docked tail and abundant, silky, feathering on the legs, chest and the lower part of the drooping ears. They have a double coat with a silky and medium length top coat, and a dense under coat. The coat color varies from chocolate, red, buff, sable, cream, buff, black or a combination of any of these. Owing to their strong hunting instincts, the American Cocker Spaniel is often used for hunting games.

They are very cheerful and friendly dogs who are very loyal towards their families. Their gentle and sensitive nature makes them all the more endearing. They are very intelligent animals and keen observers. They make good swimmers and tend to learn tricks very quickly. If you have fallen in love with the looks of this breed and decide to go ahead and bring home an American Cocker Spaniel Puppy, then there are certain things you must take care about.

First of all, buy a good fitting collar for the curious and hyperactive puppy so that it does not end up getting hurt by entering or touching any dangerous item in your home. If possible, try to remove all such items which can cause choking. Block all exits and unsafe areas for the first few weeks. It is advisable to bring home a crate to help you during transportation and to keep your puppy safe while you are unavailable for supervision. Another vital need is the grooming supplies such as shampoo, brushes, and clips to maintain the hair of your puppy in proper condition. Puppies are like children and tend to get bored easily if no attention is provided to them. So, you must keep ready a stock of puppy toys such as rope bones and chew toys to keep your puppy happily engaged.
