A hookworm is a parasite that lives and feeds inside its host’s body. The larvae of hookworms are usually picked up by dogs because they tend to eat them unknowingly or the worms are contracted through the paws. Dogs have the habit of digging mud and the hookworm always is found in contaminated soil. They can also be transferred through the mother's milk, and some veterinary doctors believe that they can be transferred through the placenta into the unborn pup.

Hookworm infection is also known as ancylostomiasis. Humans get infected by coming in contact with hookworm larvae or eggs that are present in soil or feces. The larvae of the hookworm enter the skin through feet usually and get into the blood stream to reach the lungs. Once in the lungs, they will travel up to the trachea or the windpipe and are swallowed.

Lyme disease is known to affect dogs. It is caused by a bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi. Dogs get this bacterium from a deer tick bite. When the tick remains on the dog’s skin for more than two days, the bacteria is transmitted throughout the body and the dog succumbs to this disease.
